How to Repot Succulents + Succulent Care

Succulents are some of the most popular plants due to their low-maintenance mentality which make them beautiful and enduring house plants. They are known for their juicy water storing leaves and stems that come in many different shapes, colours and sizes. They are the ideal plant that adapt well to growing in pots. So If your looking for a fun houseplant with minimal care, succulents are the way to go!

How to Repot Succulents

Materials

• variety of succulent plants• pot/ container• small rocks• soil• sand

Step 1: Grab a pot, gather your materials and begin by adding small rocks to the bottom- this is for water drainage as succulents grow best in a dry environment.   Step 2: Add moistened porous soil on top of rocks. If the soil starts out moist it will help the succulents adjust to their new home without having to water right away. Step 3: Remove succulents from their nursery containers. You may notice that the succulent roots have formed to the shape of their previous container, gently loosen their roots and soil so that they are able to grow better in their new home. Plant the largest succulent to one side of the pot first and add the smaller ones around it. Step 4: Once each succulent is placed into pot, add more soil by packing it down to stabilize the plant in place. Top with sand or aquarium rocks to give a little extra colour/interest. I added a little bit of sand and a few little pebble rocks.  NOW you have a super cute succulent planter!

But lets not stop there because you are probably wondering, what is the proper way to care for your succulents? Shockingly, I have killed a few of these guys before so I did a bit of research and combined some of the best tips to keep your succulents thriving.

 Succulent Care

SoilSucculents love fast-draining soil that is porous so water penetrates easily and drains away quickly. If your unsure of what type of soil to get, find a soil mixture that has a good crumbly structure. Soil that remains wet for long periods of time can quickly kill most succulent plants by causing root rot.WaterMost people think that succulents are dessert plants, yes, however they can go long periods of time without water, but they need to be watered more often then cactus plants and less then your average house plants. Once you notice the top layer of soil is dry, give the soil around the succulent a light watering. During the summer months aka growing season, succulents need more water prior to the winter months, where less watering is required. Overwatering is one of the biggest causes of death in succulents as it usually leads to plant rot. I usually water mine every two weeks during the summer.

SunlightSucculents often like bright indirect light but they can adapt to lower light. That being said, green succulents have a greater chance of surviving inside while succulents from the orange and purple family tend to like hot climates with direct sunlight.

TemperatureSucculents are much more cold- tolerant then we think. They thrive in daytime temperatures between 70ºF and 85ºF and nighttime temperatures between 50ºF and 55ºF. Basically the comfortable temperature of your home is ideal for them.
