Penny Tile In The Laundry Room
It's been awhile since I last posted on here, let's just say life has been busy and we will share more updates in a little while.Since building, there were a few areas of our home that we left untouched, areas that we could save some money by installing ourselves. The first two priorities are the tile backsplash in both our kitchen and laundry room. The kitchen has been a bit more difficult to figure out as I want it to be perfect and something unique but timeless -- it's going to take a few more months at least to decide, haha. As for the laundry room, I had an idea and penny tile was high on my list for favourite tile.
Since Home Hardware is having their "Spring Clean Up Event", which runs until April 17th, I knew I wanted to tackle the tile in the laundry room before summer struck!
I look a trip to my favourite Home Hardware in Wellesley and collected a few tile samples that stood out to me (see below). Originally, I really admired the marble hexagon tile to the far right, but when I held it up to our counter and cabinets, the grey veins seemed to have a bit of a blue undertone in them which I wanted to steer away from. I wanted both texture but something simple and the penny tile seems to be a tile on the horizon and it's starting to pick up popularity so that seemed like the best fit! I paired the white tile with white grout to seem the look simple and to help the time blend in with the rest of our laundry/ mudroom layout.

Last Saturday my FIL and I tackled the penny tile. I had no idea what to expect as this is my first time ever installing tile, OH EM GEE!! Thankfully no power tools were needed, phew! Since the penny tile comes in square mesh pieces (approx 10 in a box= 10 sq ft), we easily stuck them onto the wall and used tile nippers to cut some individual round pennies in half to finish the wall joints and areas around the outlets and cabinets. The install took approx. two half days. One for installing/glueing the tile to the wall, and the second day where we grouted over top of the tile. Grouting definitely is a bit more tedious and timing is everything. Since the grout needs to set before you can wipe of any access grout, but it's also a race to make sure none of the grout is to dry and you are unable to wipe a consistent-even amount off the surrounding tile.

The After!!
Over all we are so happy with how the penny tile turned out :) It's nothing bold but it suits or home and this space just fine! Now hurry on into Home Hardware to pick up some penny tile while it's on sale until April 17th!
